Repeat rules

Reference

Every repeat setting, and what each choice does to the occurrences.

You set up a repeat in the transaction editor by turning on Repeat. The step-by-step guide is Repeating transactions.

Frequency Next occurrence
Daily the next day
Weekly the same weekday
Monthly the same day of the month
Yearly the same day of the year
  • The transaction’s Date is the first occurrence. Each later one is counted from it.
  • A monthly repeat on the 29th, 30th or 31st falls on the last day of shorter months, and goes back to its own day after that.
  • A new repeat starts as Monthly, with End repeat set to Never.
End repeat What happens
Never It goes on until you end it.
After date No occurrences after the date you pick.
After recurrence It stops after a number of Repetitions.

Repetitions counts the occurrences after the first one, from 0 to 50. With 11, a monthly payment happens 12 times; with 0, only once.

Balanced creates the occurrences up to the end of next month. More appear as time goes on. So on any day, this month’s and next month’s occurrences are already in your lists.

  • Each occurrence is a transaction of its own, marked with ↻ in lists.
  • Occurrences dated after today are dimmed. If they’re spending, they count as Planned spending.
  • You clear each occurrence on its own.
  • Repeated in the overview lists all occurrences of all your repeats, by month.

When you save a change to an occurrence, Balanced asks You made changes to a repeated transaction if more than one choice is possible:

You change First occurrence Later occurrence
Date, note, accounts or amounts this, all this, future, all
Frequency, End repeat, or Repeat off all, without asking future, all
  • this: Only this transaction. The other occurrences stay as they are.
  • future: This and future transactions. Earlier occurrences keep what they had.
  • all: All transactions. Every occurrence changes, the earlier ones too.

If you change the schedule together with something else, the schedule decides which choices you get.

Turning on Repeat for an ordinary transaction doesn’t ask anything: it becomes the first occurrence.

  • With This and future transactions: the occurrence you’re editing stays and becomes the last one.
  • With All transactions, or in the first occurrence: all occurrences disappear except the first, which becomes an ordinary transaction.

Swipe left on an occurrence and tap Delete. Balanced asks Do you want to delete only the selected transaction or multiple occurrences?

You delete Choices
The first occurrence this, all
A later occurrence this, future, all
  • this: skips just this occurrence.
  • future: deletes this one and all later ones. Earlier occurrences stay.
  • all: deletes every occurrence, the earlier ones too.

An ordinary transaction is deleted straight away, without a question.
